Tether the Pier
Pier 70 project is a series of tethered patches, some fixed and some floating, which extend out into the water from the red lines of circulation. These patches are inspired by frames in a cinematic sequence, and they become platforms for various urban activities.
History of pier 70, San francisco
70 is a historic site in San Francisco's Potrero Point area. This was the site of the Union Iron Works, as well as Bethlehem Shipbuilding. It was a huge industrial site during WWI and WWII in San Francisco. Today, due to the decline of the local shipbuilding industry, most of the terminal buildings are not in use. Some of the marina's historic buildings have become artist studios.
Concept
The form is from the site mapping analysis. All the buildings are on the water. They’re based on the original Pier 70 structures and have been extended out into the Bay. The procession the buildings can be seen as frames in a cinematic sequence.
Facade and plan surface
The surfaces of the structures are developed from the patterns and patchwork quality of the photo collage.
The red lines act as a Machine, providing the circulation, pathways between programmed spaces and also defining the edges of the structures.
The building on the water
Fixed structures
They are six structures which are fixed on piles above the surfaced of the Bay, mimicking the structures of Pier 70 itself.
Unfixed structures
The unfixed structures float on the water and rise and fall with the tide.
